CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Kanako Watanabe
Age: 15
Subject taught: N/A, student
Canon: Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto
Canon point: Post-series
Personality:
Kanako Watanabe is someone that makes use of deception in her everyday life. To her classmates, she acts like a ditzy flirt. To her fellow Glittering Crux members, she seems to be a cold and calculating person. The personality she shows the Glittering Crux is what most would assume to be her true self, but there is still even more hidden beneath that, though few ever see it.
At school, Kanako tries to present herself as an airheaded, spoiled flirt--as someone who is perfectly okay with using her body and sexuality to get what she wants, she finds having a reputation for promiscuity to be to her advantage. She was married at a young age and easily admits to being a gold digger, describing her marriage as being held together by the "unbreakable chains of greed" because her rich, significantly older husband only cares about her body and she only cares about his money. How little they care for each other as people is evident in the fact that there is a language barrier between them--Kanako speaks Japanese, and he speaks French. Because of this, they only communicate through Kanako's secretary, and neither makes an effort to learn the other's language. As Kanako does not care for her husband, she's constantly making excuses to stay at school and thus far away from him. Besides using him for his money, Kanako often uses him to tease those she's flirting with. She makes no effort to hide the fact that she is married, often making comments about how she can't go any further than kissing between a glass window because doing anything else would be cheating, and occasionally making comments where she attempts to use the fact that doing anything would be cheating to entice the other party.
Kanako flaunts her money and status among her peers constantly. Trying to look like a "rich bitch," she tries to appear fickle and often acts with very obvious fake niceness. She shows no regard for school rules, oftentimes talking loudly during class about how boring it is. On one occasion, she even had her servants cut her hair during class. However, While Kanako tries to look spoiled and ditzy, she does not make any effort to hide that she is excellent with business, and often plays the stock market for her and her husband. Her business sense is why she's in charge of finances as the head of the Glittering Crux's "Adult Bank," but we'll get into that later.
As a member of the Glittering Crux, Kanako shows herself to be extremely intelligent and calculating underneath her airhead act. In this persona, she tends to come off as aloof rather than fake-friendly. She is quick to react as well as eager to take charge and lead others, having been both the leader of the Adult Bank section of the Crux and determined to make herself or one of her subordinates the leader of the entire Glittering Crux. She didn't want to be leader for the power, however--while her section technically owned all of the Cybodies(alien mechas that run on libido, basically), she wanted complete control of them so they could not be used for anything bad--but never made these intentions known and tried to appear to act simply for selfish reasons, like want of power.
In reality, Kanako does what she does because she believes it is necessary. She believed that it was inevitable that the Cybodies would be released into the normal world, which is why she decided she had to join the Crux and gain control of them. She's extremely prepared for every way she's thought of things going wrong, too--for example, the yacht she lives on is only as big as it because she intended to use it to evacuate the people of the island they live on if the volcanoes erupted(which, she believed they might when the Cybodies were released). She's a hard worker that puts what she feels she has to do before anything else; stating that if she has to sacrifice her personal integrity for the good of the world, then so be it. She's okay with becoming whatever kind of person she has to for the greater good.
Another notable thing about Kanako is that while she is skilled at manipulating her relationships with other people to suit her needs, she doesn't really know how to legitimately connect with other people. With her upbringing(it's never explained, but it is stated that she probably never went to school before the school year in which Star Driver takes place), she simply never learned how. Being rich and powerful, she can have and do pretty much whatever she wants...with the exception of the simple pleasures in life. That's why Kanako goes to school, even though she doesn't have to--she wants that normal experience, even if she seems bored when she's in class. Besides benefitting her, her flirty behavior is the only way she knows how to be friendly with other people. Kissing complete strangers through glass windows is, in her mind, how she can connect to another person, if only for a moment. When she wanted to get closer to Takuto, the boy that sits in front of her in class, she went about it by flirting with him even more than she usually would and repeatedly trying to pressure him into kissing her through the glass. She seems to envy those that get to live fairly normal lives, saying she wished she could have a boyfriend like one of the girls in her class because that's "part of high school life"--she says this despite the fact that she already has a husband, because it isn't typical for a fifteen year old girl to be already in a loveless marriage. She even tells her pet alligator that he's lucky because he doesn't have a care in the world, whereas she has a lot of responsibilities to attend to.
Because of her behavior, the people Kanako cares for aren't likely to notice at first. Kanako simply doesn't feel the need to show her fondness towards her servants, Simone and Takashi, on a regular basis. Both of them resent her because while she may let them see the real her sometimes, she usually keeps one of her personas up around even them at all times. She chooses to show her fondness for Takuto by flirting with him constantly, but whether this is because of romantic affection or just because she likes to tease him and finds his reactions amusing is not clear. Because she flirts with everyone, the way she singles out Takuto wouldn't necessarily tip anyone off to how genuinely fond she is of him. Her fondness for people really only becomes clear when they're in danger, but she'll still put her mission before their safety. In Simone's case, Kanako fretted over her when she decided to fight against Takuto with her Cybody, and tried to convince her to let someone else risk themself in battle. This certainly caught Simone off guard, as she noted that Kanako rarely shows any stress over anything. In Takuto's case, she tried to discourage him from fighting against her when it was her turn to engage him in Cybody combat, because she was worried that she might kill him. However, it should be noted that because whoever defeated Takuto would become leader of the Crux, she would still have been willing to kill him if she had to, because in her mind her affection towards one individual is not more important than the safety of the world.
Kanako also seems to hold forgiveness in high regard. When Simone flirted with the idea of being angry at Takashi for leaving her and Kanako for awhile, Kanako told her she that wants her to be strong, and that the strong forgive those that have wronged them.
